Every year the State Railway of Thailand (SRT) organizes steam train excusions using only a few steam locomotives built during the WWII period and are still functioning. These indeed resemble historial train rides which are really rare opportunities not only in Thailand but also worldwide.

SRT organises the following six steam train services to mark special occasions every year.

  • March 26: SRT’s Foundation Day
  • June 3: HM Queen Suthida’s birthday
  • July 28: HM King Maha Vajiralongkorn’s birthday
  • August 12: HM Queen Sirikit’s birthday and National Mother’s Day
  • October 23: King Chulalongkorn Memorial Day
  • December 5: HM King Bhumibol Adulyadej’s birthday and National Father’s Day

Taking the opportunity that the SRT is organizing the steam train excursion between Bangkok and Nakhon Pathom on Friday 3 June 2022 (fan carriages only), Inn Train is also organizing a one-day trip with 2 progarm options.

 

Option 1: Main Progam

This program is suitable for a family with young child(ren) because the progarm is designed to incorporate fun activities for kids at Thung Dhama Na (an agricultural learning center). 

   07:30 Hrs   Meet at Hua Lum Pong train station and take photos with the steam locomotive

   08:10 Hrs   The train departs from Hua Lum Pong. Inn Train serves breakfast

   10:30 Hrs   (approx.) The train arrives at Nakhon Pathom station. Go by air-con van to 'Don Wai' floating market

   11:30 Hrs   Arrive at 'Don Wai' floating market. Enjoy shopping and having lunch at own's convenience

   12:30 Hrs   Leave from the market to 'Thung Dhama Na' (agriculture learning centre)

   13:00 Hrs   Arrive at 'Thung Dhama Na'. Enjoy activities at own's expense (600 Baht per person) for the following activities: rice planting, mud sliding, collecting eggs, making clay pots, making salted eggs

   15:30 Hrs   Leave from 'Thung Dhama Na' to Nakhon Pathom train station

   16:00 Hrs   Arrive at Nakhon Pathom station and pay a visit to Phra Pathom Chedi

   16:30 Hrs   The train departs from Nakhon Pathom station for Bangkok

   18:20 Hrs   Arrive safely at Bangkok train station (Hua Lum Pong)

 

 

Price: 1,650 Baht per person (Child 2-6 years at 1,500 per person | Below 2 years at 600 Baht per person)

Option 2: Travel in your own style (customized program)

This option is designed for a group of 8 people or more who would like to set their own program. Everyone will still start with the steam train ride from Bangkok to Nakhon Pathom. After that they will be provided a private van to follow their own travel itinerary. They will come back to the Nakhon Pathom train station before 16.30hrs to take the steam train back to Bangkok.

Price starts with 1,650 Baht per person. This option requires a group of at least 8 people and price per person is subject to change according to visiting places and the number of people in the group.

Recommended Places in Nakhon Pathom

If you opt to choose to travel on your own program, these are some recommended places you may want to visit. It is advisable to study travel routes so that you have sufficient time to enjoy a place of your interest and to come back to the train station in time.

Wat Phra Pathom Chedi Ratchaworamahawihan 

The Temple houses the country’s largest pagoda, Phra Pathom Chedi enshrining the Buddha’s relics, which was built in 1853 in the reign of King Rama IV. The highlight of the temple includes Phra Ruang Rotchanarit, a Buddha image in the standing posture of giving a pardon, installed in the niche of the wihan located to the North in front of Phra Pathom Chedi. At the base of the pagoda is enshrined the royal relics of King Rama VI. The Wat Phra Pathom Chedi museum is a collection of artefacts unearthed in nakhon Pathom, which date back to the Ban Chiang and Dvaravati periods. The pagoda majestically stands out under the electric lights at night.  


 

Sanam Chan Palace

Only 2 kms from the Phra Pathom Chedi is located the Sanam Chan Palace. The Palace was built by King Rama VI. Construction began around 1907 when he was still Crown Prince. The plan of the complex, drawn up by the Prince, was almost a complete departure from traditional Thai palaces, and strongly resembles a modern suburban development. The Palace complex encompasses significant and majestic throne halls; for example, Phra Thinang (throne-hall) Phiman Pathom, Phra Thinang Samakkhi Mukkhamat, Phra Tammak Thap Kaeo.

 

Samphran Elephant Ground and Crocodile Farm

Samphran Elephant Ground and Crocodile Farm was established in 1885. This place is the breeding farm of many types of crocodile, especially those endangered typed. It is also served as elephant village where many stray elephants are adopted, fed and trained for show. Elephant Ride is also available.

Every type of crocodiles are in the 6-meter deep ponds for the crocodile of different ages and types. Here you can learn more about the life cycle of crocodile. Every pond is made of cement to prevent the crocodile from digging the bottom to flee. The crocodile catcher show is held at a shallow pond. You can also enjoy the magic show and elephant show.

Moreover, tourists can enjoy the orchid farm on the area of 5 rai of which highlight is Cattleya Orchid. Besides the elephants and the crocodiles, tourists can enjoy freshwater fish, playground, relax under the shade of banyan trees or visit newborn elephants and feed the elephants. The park also offers a mini-zoo where you can find snakes, monkeys, gibbons, rabbits, peacocks and tigers.

 

Thung Bua Daeng (red lotus field)

Thung Bua Daeng is a red lotus field co-located with the floating market with the same name. Occupying an area of 44 rai, the Floating Market features 2 breeds of water lilies: the original Nymphaea lotus that will blossom in the morning: hence, if tourists arrive late, they will miss seeing them and Daeng Siam Tropical Water lily (Daeng Mamio) breed that will blossom late and all day: therefore, tourists can come to see them all day. Highlighted activities of the place is to ride a boat (upto 5 people per boat) to admire the water lilies and taking pictures from a drone serviced by the place. Signature of Thai snack here is called "Miang Klib Bua" made from lotus petal. 

 

Lam Phaya Floating Market

Wat Lam Phaya Floating Market is located in front of the Lam Phaya Temple and on the bank of Nakhon Chai Si River (Tha Chin River). The market is a centre of fruits and vegetables, agricultural products, wickerwork, woven textiles, dyed textiles and Food sold at reasonable price. A variety of fish can be seen at the front of the Temple. In front of the temple, there is an area where tourist can feed fish. Moreover, the market offers a boat ride on the ThaJeen River. There are some boat options for tourists to choose; firstly, a traditional lazy rowboat, which takes around half an hour from Lam Phaya Temple to Jao Mae Tubtim shrine. Secondly, a round trip by a tugboat which will take tourists from Lam Phaya Temple to Sukwatanaram Temple. And lastly, a boat with canopy, which will take around 2 and a half hour from Lam Phaya Temple to Bang Phra Temple (LuangPor Pin Temple).

 

Khlong Maha SaWat

Khlong Maha Sawat is a Canal (khlong means canal) that was built by starting from Khlong Bangkok Noi running through Amphoe Phutthamonthon to exit to the Tha Chin River. The construction began and was finished in the reign of King Rama IV. With a width of 14 metres, it was considered to be the widest canal in that period. It has preserved the community lifestyle by the canal for a long time.

Today, the people in the communities provide agro tourism services with a boat tour to admire the gardeners’ ways of life along the canal. Get on a boat at Wat Suwannaram, Tambon Salaya. Visit orchid gardens and gain knowledge about orchid planting. Travel to the lotus field, fruit orchards, and pomelo and jack fruit orchards where gardeners conduct a mixed cultivation farming system. Visit the Maha Sawat Agriculturists’ Housewives Group to see the production of processed agricultural goods such as iodized salted egg and jasmine rice crisps. Tourists can take a boat for six persons and the trip takes about 2 - 4 hours.
